REVERSING HAIR LOSS NATURALLY

Our hair is said to be our crowning glory, and it is normal to want to improve our hair if it is not to our satisfaction.  A function of the hair is to regulate the body temperature.  Hair serves as a physical barrier between external cold air and the skin, and it also traps warm air in between the skin and the hair.  In that way, a person will not suffer from severe cold.
As we age, our physical appearance gradually changes. The overall hair density changes and the strands of hair become thinner, which will eventually lead to hair loss.  We all shed about 100 hairs each day, but if you are losing more than that, then you may have some other problems.  Some may be experiencing female-pattern hair loss also known as androgenetic alopecia.

Although we cannot change our genes, there are things we can do to protect and maintain our hair.   Losing our hair can be deeply distressing and affects all age groups, especially women.  Whether it is due to bad genes, hormonal imbalance, poor diet or even stress, the effect is usually devastating.  Even though it is common knowledge, that hair thinning is a natural part of our life, it does not mean that we have to accept it and do nothing.

If we are trying to regrow hair that we have lost, or simply like to improve the hair that we have, there are some simple remedies that we can try at home.  Their proven benefits can help to stimulate growth and enhance the hair that we have.

Hair thrives on protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B 12.  So, choosing the right foods with the right nutrients will help to keep our hair strong and healthy.  If you are a vegetarian and anemic, you lack iron in your body which is essential for healthy hair.  Therefore, make sure you eat plenty of leafy greens such as spinach, kale, beans, tofu, peas and nuts.

Tips for caring for our hair at home:-

  • In a circular motion, massage the scalp with some coconut oil using the finger tips, for several minutes before washing.  This action improves the blood circulation to the scalp to encourage better hair growth.  While shampooing, Continue massaging.  This will invigorate the hair roots even more.
  • After washing, let the hair air-dry, as heated tools can damage the hair.  We must realize that only damaged or sick hair fall, so we have to be gentle when caring for our hair.
  • If we have to use heated tools, we must choose tools that have adjustable settings and keep them at the lowest level.  The less heat we use the better it is for our hair.
  • Avoid brushing the hair when it is wet, instead gently comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Another factor that causes hair loss is stress such as a job loss, a divorce and the loss of a loved one.   We have to try and remove that stress element and change our mind-set to think positively.

When our mind is clear, at ease and peaceful, and our body is fed with the right nutrient-packed foods in a clean and healthy environment, we will stay healthy with a head full of youthful looking hair.

Most hair care products on the market do not address the fundamental and physiological factors of hair loss.  It is frustrating to watch your hair gets thinner and thinner and disappointing to use prescriptions after prescriptions without seeing any positive results.  We need to discover how to restore our body's ability to create the essential enzymes to nurture our hair follicles.

Remedies to treat hair loss at home:-
1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has long been used for treating hair loss.  It also soothes the scalp and conditions the hair.  It can reduce dandruff and unblock hair follicles that may be blocked by excess oil. You can apply pure aloe vera gel to your scalp and hair a few times per week.  You can also use shampoo and conditioner that contain aloe vera.

2. Coconut oil

Coconut oil contains fatty acids that penetrate inside the hair shaft and reduce protein loss from hair.  Coconut oil can be used either before or after you wash your hair, depending on the hair type.  If the hair tends to be oily, an overnight leave-in treatment is recommended, it can be added a few hours before the hair is washed.   There needs to be more research on coconut oil as a promoter of hair growth, but it  has been shown to improve the health and luster of hair.

3. Fish oil

Consuming omega fatty acids can help to improve the hair from the inside, since they are filled with nutrients and proteins.  Taking an omega 3 supplement along with antioxidants, helps to improve hair density and reduces hair loss. Omega fatty acids help the cells to work correctly and can boost immunity, leading to better overall health.

4. Ginseng

Taking ginseng supplements can promote hair growth by stimulating hair follicles. Ginsenosides are the active components of ginseng and are thought to be responsible for its positive effect on hair.  Always take as directed and be sure to check for any possible side effects.

5. Onion juice

Onion juice has been shown to successfully treat patchy alopecia areata by promoting hair growth.  Onion juice is also thought to improve circulation.   Blend a few onions and squeeze out the juice, and apply the juice to the scalp and hair.  Leave this in hair for at least 15 minutes.   I usually add some rice water and leave overnight. Shampoo and Condition as usual.

6. Rosemary oil

Rosemary is one of the first essential oils people choose to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss.   Rosemary oil stimulates new hair growth and can be used to treat androgenetic alopecia.  Mix a few drops of rosemary oil into a carrier oil and massage it into the hair and scalp before rinsing.  Please note that essential oils are not to be added directly to the skin.  It is recommended to add the oil in a carrier oil or to shampoo and conditioner.

7. Geranium oil

You can use geranium oil to promote hair growth and boost circulation.  Mix a few drops into a carrier oil and use it to make a hair mask.  A few drops can also be added to our shampoo and conditioner.  Geranium oil can help to strengthen, hydrate, and restore your hair.

8. Lemon

Fresh lemon juice or lemon oil can be used since they are said to enhance hair quality and growth.  Lemon oil can help maintain a healthy scalp and encourage hair growth. Apply fresh lemon juice to the scalp and hair, 15 minutes before you shampoo.   Lemon essential oil diluted in a carrier oil as a hair mask can also be used.

It is important that we take time each day to focus on nourishing our hair to get the luscious locks we want.  Taking this step and practicing self-care will be extra beneficial if our hair loss is related to any emotional or stress-related issue.  We need to stay positive and do our best to maintain a healthy lifestyle that will complement our hair treatment plan.
